Best Personal Trainer Insurance 2026
The gym's insurance doesn't cover you as an independent trainer. Professional liability starts at $15/month — here's what every trainer actually needs.
⚠️ Independent Trainers: The Gym's Insurance Does NOT Cover You
If you are an independent contractor (not a W-2 employee) training at a gym, you are explicitly excluded from the gym's GL policy. This is standard — gyms do not want liability for independent contractors they don't control. Your professional liability and GL must be your own policies.
Personal Trainer Insurance: What You Need
Professional Liability
Covers claims that your training program, exercise prescription, or coaching caused a client injury. NASM, ACE, and NSCA require this for certification. One client injury claim can cost $25,000–$150,000 in legal fees alone.
General Liability
Covers third-party injuries at your training location and property damage. Most gyms require it for independent trainers. Often bundled with professional liability for $30–$60/mo total.
Commercial Auto
Mobile personal trainers traveling to client homes, offices, or outdoor locations need commercial auto. Personal auto excludes business use.
Online Training Coverage
Online-only trainers still need professional liability. GL exposure is lower (no premises), but program design liability is the same as in-person.
Certification Insurance Requirements
Professional liability required for CPT certification maintenance
Professional liability recommended; many ACE-preferred gyms require it
