What Each Policy Covers
General liability and workers' comp are not interchangeable — they cover completely different risks. Most businesses that have employees legally need both.
General Liability (GL)
- ✓Third-party bodily injury (customer, visitor, bystander)
- ✓Third-party property damage (damage to client property)
- ✓Personal injury (libel, slander, false advertising)
- ✓Products & completed operations liability
- ✓Legal defense costs for covered claims
Does NOT cover employee injuries — that is workers comp.
Workers' Compensation (WC)
- ✓Medical expenses for work-related employee injuries
- ✓Lost wages while employee recovers
- ✓Permanent disability benefits
- ✓Death benefits for family of employee killed on the job
- ✓Employer's liability (employee sues employer over injury)
Does NOT cover non-employee third parties — that is general liability.
Why You Almost Certainly Need Both
If you have employees and work at client locations, interact with the public, or handle other people's property — you need both GL and WC. A single incident can trigger both at once: imagine a worker trips while carrying equipment and falls into a client's glass display case. That one event is both a WC claim (worker's injury) and a GL claim (damage to client's property).
Workers' comp is also legally mandatory in most states once you hire employees. Operating without it exposes you to fines, lawsuits, and the full cost of an employee's medical bills and lost wages out of pocket.
