Coverage Types for Event Coordinators

These are the key insurance policies most relevant to your business type — ranked by importance.

📋

Professional Liability (E&O)

Required

Covers claims you failed to deliver as contracted — wrong venue booked, vendor communications that failed, events that did not meet specifications. A botched $100,000 corporate conference is a serious E&O exposure.

🛡️

General Liability

Required

Covers third-party bodily injury and property damage at events you coordinate. A guest trips over a decoration you arranged, a vendor you coordinated damages venue property — GL is your first line of defense. Required by most venues and corporate clients.

🍸

Liquor Liability

Recommended

If you arrange or oversee bar service at events, liquor liability protects against claims tied to alcohol-related incidents — DUI accidents, overservice claims, or injuries involving intoxicated guests. Many clients require this for events with open bars.

📦

Inland Marine (Event Equipment)

Recommended

Covers decorations, audio/visual equipment, display materials, and other items you own and transport to events. Standard GL doesn't cover your own property.

What You Need to Know

  • E&O is your most important coverage — event coordinators are sued for vendor failures, miscommunications, and events that don't meet expectations. Your contract helps but doesn't eliminate claims.
  • Venue requirements: most hotels, country clubs, and commercial event spaces require a current GL certificate naming them as additional insured before you may coordinate at their facility.
  • Liquor liability exposure varies by your role — if you merely refer a bar vendor but don't oversee service, exposure is lower. If you manage staffing, setup, and alcohol logistics, you need liquor liability.
  • Cancellation and postponement losses are NOT covered by GL or E&O — event cancellation insurance covers client losses from venue closure, vendor bankruptcy, or weather. Consider recommending it to clients.
  • Corporate event clients often require $2M GL minimums and $1M E&O minimums. Build your limits to match your client base.
